The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies was established in 1985 to promote a better understanding of Islam through advanced research,  teaching, and to co-operation between Muslim and non-Muslim scholars and academic institutions. It aims to sponsor research programmes concerned not only with religious, cultural, and historical aspects of the Islamic tradition but equally with the relevance of Islam to the needs of contemporary Muslims societies. Among the means of achieving these aims, particular emphasis is placed on the provision of visiting fellowships and research scholarships to promote academic collaboration with overseas universities and on the maximum practicable co-operation with the University of Oxford and a close association with St. Cross College.

Maulana Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi, who is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, delivered this address on Tuesday, the 22^nd August, 1989 at the Centre which was attended by a large number of British, Indian, and Arab intellectuals.
